Brian Shaffer was a medical student who seemed to have a very promising life ahead of him. He was already in his 2nd year of medical school, dating a woman he had planned on marrying, and he was looking forward to eventually having a wonderful career as a physician. But like many students under the pressure of medical school, he wanted to blow off a bit of steam by taking a night off by going out with some friends.
